Raymond Saner, “Advantages and Hindrances for older persons who consider moving to new homes in older age”
This paper focuses on the options that are available for older persons and their respective society to rethink housing and urban planning to better fit the needs and aspirations of older people. In addition, the paper also addresses the psycho-social challenges that older people and their environment face as they advance with age and need to cope with losses such as finding new ways to make friends and acquaintances to avoid isolation and unhappiness.

The Sinergie – Sima XXIX Annual Conference was held at the University of Napoli Federico II in Italy on 15-16 June 2017. The theme of the annual conference was Value co-creation: management challenges for business and society. The CSEND team made a presentation and wrote a paper that focused on the developmental challenges of cooperatives.

ILO, ICA and CSEND SIDE EVENT AT THE FIFTH GLOBAL REVIEW OF AID FOR TRADE “Promoting Cooperative-to-cooperative trade for sustainable development”
Cooperative enterprises are major players in the global economy. They range from small grassroots initiatives to multibillion dollar businesses and operate in all sectors of the economy. The panel will start with a theoretical presentation of the links between cooperatives and trade. The panel will subsequently turn to practical experiences, and build on cooperative-to-cooperative trade and how it can make value chains shorter, fairer and more efficient and competitive. The seven internationally agreed cooperative principles guide the work of cooperatives around the world. The principle, “Cooperation among Cooperatives”, is the principle most related to the trade, South-South and Global Value Chain perspectives. In the practical part, the case of “China Coop” on promoting cooperative-to-cooperative trade in Asia through different platforms will be presented. The agricultural and consumer cooperative experiences from Italy will be presented to showcase engagement in ethical trade practices using cooperative principles and highlighting the advantages of agricultural and consumer cooperatives working together across the value chain from a perspective of fairness and competitiveness. After the presentations, there will be a round table discussion followed by questions from the floor.

Education Policy and Research
CSEND conducts educational policy research and connects policy researchers in order to promote more effective governance of the educational sector. Good governance in education, seeing from the CSEND perspective, means quality education for all. Therefore the CSEND policy research objective is to promote more equitable access to quality education may it be primary, secondary or tertiary education. At the same time, CSEND develops effective institutional management instruments with the goal of supporting more efficient and effective use of educational resources in order to sustain the high quality level of education in the context of life long learning.

Strengthening Bolivia’s Negotiation Capacity in the Context of Climate Change & Clean Development Mechanism Negotiations
A Negotiation Capacity Building project was implemented in Bolivia in 2000-2001 as part of the National Strategy Study (NSS) of the World Bank. The goal of the NSS Study was to strengthen Bolivia’s participation in the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol. The subsequent Negotiation Capacity Building project was intended as a further strengthening of Bolivian negotiators’ skills and competencies within the context of the Kyoto Protocol negotiations and the related CDM mechanisms, as well as to strengthen these abilities in other Bolivian public officials not yet integrated in these negotiations and to facilitate their participation into the teamwork of the Bolivian negotiation delegation.
The Negotiation Capacity Building project was financed by the World Bank and the State Secretariat of Economic Affairs (SECO), Switzerland.

Opera performance in La Paz, Bolivia in 2001
El Requiem para la Selva Amazonica Op. 10 (1992) for a mixed choir and seven instruments was first performed in Germany in 1993 by Camerata Vocale under the direction of Klaus Braun. Oldrich Halas, of Bolivian and Czech origin, adapted the opera to the Bolivian-Amazon context in 2001. His adaptation of the original Requiem for an Amazon Forest was performed in La Paz, Bolivia, on 26th June 2001 to accompany the book presentation of the same day organised by CSEND. The books’ title is « Negociaciones en Cambio Climático y Ambiente:Dinámica global y local (Climate Change and Environmental Negotiations: Global and Local Dynamics) edited by Raymond Saner, Sergio Jauregui, Lichia Yiu published by Los Amigos del Libro, La Paz, 2001. The opera performance was funded by CSEND.
Oldrich Halas selected a combination of classical and regional musical instruments that were used by the following musicians namely: Flauta:Guillermo Luna, Clarinete en si bemol:Eduardo de la Fuente, Fagot:Mauricio Wayar, Violonchelo:Dunja Garcfa, Piano:Wendy Asturizaga, Tinbales:Israel Conradi. While the group played the opera, the video artist Antonio Suarez projected magnificent images of the Bolivian Amazon regions of Beni and Pando on the walls of the hall where the opera was being played.
